Target Audience: French Immersion, Extended & Core (grades 4 - 8) - Content assigned through Google Classroom.

Problem: French teachers spend many hours searching multiple websites for reading & listening texts that are at the right level and match their students’ interests and curriculum needs. Most texts are created for native French speakers, and thus are often not accessible. Those that are accessible are created for a younger audience and don't cater to curriculum needs.

Textos -
Texts & Resources for French Teachers

Empathize:

Questions: How teachers go about teaching Reading and Listening skills; what frustrations they face; what websites teachers favoured for content. I explored these websites for their strengths and weaknesses, and also as potential sources for links.

User Journey image: process for resource search
  1. Books are expensive

  2. Teachers spend at least four hours/week searching for texts -  most online texts are inaccessible

  3. It's hard to find texts that fit both the topic & text forms

  4. They then have to create accompanying resources

Pain points:

Persona: Joe is a middle school FSL teacher who needs quick access to low-vocab/high interest texts that are themed to meet the curriculum needs.

Ideation:

I started out with a basic design, but wanted to create the look and feel of a classroom. I created mockups of both ideas and shared them with some teacher friends for feedback. They liked the simplicity of the first design (top 2), but the creativity of the second (bottom left). I worked on the second design to make it less crowded (bottom right paper wireframe). I created a low-fi prototype and shared it with the same people.

Based on feedback from the lo-fi prototype, I streamlined the IA (previous image) from six pages to four with many sub-pages.

The IA was an interesting challenge because while there are icons for Reading/Writing for French Immersion, and Reading/Writing for Core French, I had to figure out where the Social Studies texts would go. Additionally, Grades 7 & 8 break Social Studies into History and Geography.

Mockups & IA:

Usability testing of the high-fi prototype was positive. Teachers expressed that they loved the clean and inviting design. They were  interested in discussing further development. For example, they wanted to see ESL content, content for more grades, and more dedicated content.

Prototype & Usability Testing:

I added some dedicated content (which I created), but there is room for far more. I took all the suggestions and put them into my next steps.
