Planning:
-
The course requires a facilitator, so I chose PowerPoint (in case the facilitator was not comfortable with Google Slides).
-
This is a sensitive topic, so it would be necessary to start with a team building activity. Also, it is important for maximum participation by learners, so teamwork was built in as a major component.
-
As a foundation, the course begins with discussing definitions of microaggressions.
-
A YouTube video of people talking about microaggressions creates the space for people to participate by sharing their thoughts and experiences, and deepen the discussion.
-
This is followed by activities for considering the possible interpretations of certain comments, for considering possible intent and impact, and for discussing some quotes.
-
With understanding of the topic established, the training ends with discussion and practice of ways to address microaggressions when we experience/witness them.
-
I used content from other sources as my subject matter expertise. The only thing I changed, was to format the quotes (job aids) to match the presentation.
