Challenge: Workplaces and schools are promoting a more inclusive environment for their diverse communities and need a course.

Micro-aggressions Training

Solution: Instructor-led training on what micro-aggressions are and on how to address them without feeling uncomfortable and being confrontational.

Learning Objectives: The learner should be able to choose between calling out and calling in, and comfortably respond to microaggressions witnessed.

Tools: PowerPoint, Microsoft Word

Deliverables:

  • Discussion questions PDF (sourced and formatted).

  • Calling In / Calling Out document (sourced)

  • Facilitator Guide

  • Storyboard

  • PowerPoint presentation

  • Statement & Interpretation handouts (sourced).

Sources:

  • Seed the way (Adapted from Oregon Center for Educational Equity: What Did You Just Say? Responses to Racist Comments Collected from the Field, and the School Reform Initiative Pocket Guide to Probing Questions)

  • Job aid from: Edib.harvard.edu handout.

Planning:

  • The course requires a facilitator, so I chose PowerPoint (in case the facilitator was not comfortable with Google Slides).

  • This is a sensitive topic, so it would be necessary to start with a team building activity. Also, it is important for maximum participation by learners, so teamwork was built in as a major component.

  • As a foundation, the course begins with discussing definitions of microaggressions.

  • A YouTube video of people talking about microaggressions creates the space for people to participate by sharing their thoughts and experiences, and deepen the discussion.

  • This is followed by activities for considering the possible interpretations of certain comments, for considering possible intent and impact, and for discussing some quotes.

  • With understanding of the topic established, the training ends with discussion and practice of ways to address microaggressions when we experience/witness them.

  • I used content from other sources as my subject matter expertise. The only thing I changed, was to format the quotes (job aids) to match the presentation.
